They don’t know it yet, but our characters are living in a pregnant moment, the final year of elegance and sobriety before the future arrives.

Liberated by the social revolutions of the 1960s and blissfully ignorant of the excess and technology about to come, they move through the city with vigor, agency, and style, populating its terraces and cafés and bookstores, engaging in impassioned dialogues about art, politics, and culture. A spirit of dandyism reigns: perfectly tailored suits, tan sedans with brown leather interior, Cuban heels on cobblestones. This is the moment—the more sublime for being fleeting—of strong personalities, liberal attitudes, and cinematographic style poised just on the cusp of decadence.
